Raynard Washington, PhD, MPH

Dr. Raynard Washington serves as Mecklenburg County’s Health Director, responsible for directing all public health and environmental health activities of Mecklenburg County’s Public Health Department. Prior to his appointment to this role in December 2020, he served as Mecklenburg County’s Deputy Health Director leading many of the department’s internal operations, including key aspects of the COVID-19 response. Before moving to Charlotte, Dr. Washington served as Chief Epidemiologist and Deputy Commissioner for the City of Philadelphia where he made significant progress in expanding their public health system, led the city’s violence prevention strategy, and championed the role of public health in local government with a focus on achieving health equity. Dr. Washington earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Pittsburgh.
